Conifers native to the southeastern US are used much too infrequently in the landscape. This is in large measure because there has not been enough selection of superior and novel forms. Juniperus virginiana 'Regal' is a conifer that has the potential to be a game-changer. The branches of this red cedar are heavily variegated with gold needles for a sparkling landscape appearance. It was found in Farmville, VA and shared with the JC Raulston Arboretum. We distributed it as Juniperus virginiana (Farmvile variegated) to nurserymen before the name 'Regal' was applied. It has proven to be a very worthy addition to the landscape where it has grown at a moderate rate but retained the very heavy variegation. Red cedar likes full sun and relatively well-drained soils. It will tolerate a considerable amount of drought once established. We expect it to grow to about 30' tall over time and it looks as though it will have a fairly wide pyramidal habit, perhaps half as wide as tall.
